How to Play Rummy
Rummy is a classic card game and the foundation for an entire family of matching games including Gin Rummy, Canasta, and many more. The basic Rummy game (sometimes called "Straight Rummy") is easy to learn yet offers genuine strategic depth. It has been played worldwide for over a century.
Objective
Be the first player to get rid of all your cards by forming and laying down melds (sets and runs). Alternatively, reduce your deadwood points to as few as possible when another player goes out.
Setup
- Use a standard 52-card deck. Works with 2-6 players.
- For 2 players: deal 10 cards each.
- For 3-4 players: deal 7 cards each.
- For 5-6 players: deal 6 cards each.
- Place remaining cards face-down as the stock pile.
- Flip the top card face-up to start the discard pile.
- Card values: Aces = 1 point, face cards = 10 points, number cards = face value.
Melds
- Sets — Three or four cards of the same rank (e.g., 9♠ 9♥ 9♦).
- Runs — Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., 3♥ 4♥ 5♥ 6♥).
Gameplay
- On your turn, draw one card from either the stock or the discard pile.
- If you have a valid meld, you may lay it face-up on the table (optional).
- You may also lay off cards by adding them to any melds already on the table (yours or opponents').
- End your turn by discarding one card face-up onto the discard pile.
- You cannot draw from the discard pile and discard the same card in one turn.
Going Out
- A player "goes out" when they have no cards left in hand (after melding, laying off, and discarding).
- You must discard to go out (ending with exactly zero cards after your discard).
- When a player goes out, the round ends immediately.
- If the stock runs out and no one has gone out, the discard pile is shuffled to form a new stock.
Scoring
- The winner scores 0 points for the round.
- Other players score the total value of cards remaining in their hands.
- Play multiple rounds. The player with the lowest total score after an agreed number of rounds wins.
- Alternatively, the first player to go out earns points equal to opponents' remaining hand totals.
Strategy Tips
- Meld early if safe — Laying melds reduces your risk if an opponent goes out, but reveals information.
- Watch the discard pile — Know which cards your opponents pick up to avoid helping them.
- Keep flexible cards — Cards that can fit into multiple melds (like a 7 that fits a set or a run) are more valuable.
- Discard high cards first — If you get caught, face cards cost 10 points each.
- Think about laying off — Sometimes holding a card to lay off on an opponent's meld is better than forming your own.
- Track remaining cards — As the game progresses, fewer options exist. Adapt your plan accordingly.
