How to Play Gin Rummy
Gin Rummy is one of the most popular two-player card games ever created. Combining skill, strategy, and a bit of luck, it challenges players to form sets and runs while keeping their unmatched cards (deadwood) as low as possible. The game was invented in 1909 and remains a favorite in homes and clubs worldwide.
Objective
Form your hand into melds (sets and runs) while minimizing the point value of your unmatched cards. Be the first to reach the target score across multiple rounds, typically 100 points.
Setup
- Use a standard 52-card deck. Two players only.
- Deal 10 cards to each player, one at a time.
- Place the remaining cards face-down as the stock pile.
- Flip the top card of the stock face-up to start the discard pile.
- Card values: Aces = 1 point, face cards = 10 points, number cards = face value.
Melds
There are two types of valid melds:
- Sets — Three or four cards of the same rank (e.g., 7♠ 7♥ 7♦).
- Runs — Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., 4♣ 5♣ 6♣).
A card can only belong to one meld. Aces are always low (A-2-3 is valid, Q-K-A is not).
Gameplay
- The non-dealer may take the initial face-up card or pass. If they pass, the dealer has the same option.
- On your turn, draw one card from either the stock or the discard pile.
- Then discard one card face-up onto the discard pile.
- Organize your hand into melds. Cards not in melds are deadwood.
- Your turn ends after you discard.
Knocking and Gin
- Knock — If your deadwood totals 10 points or fewer, you may knock to end the round. Lay your melds face-up and show your deadwood.
- Gin — If you have zero deadwood (all cards are in melds), you "go gin" for a bonus.
- Lay off — When an opponent knocks, you may add your unmatched cards to their melds (but not when they go gin).
- Undercut — If the opponent's deadwood is equal to or less than the knocker's after laying off, the opponent scores a bonus.
Scoring
- Knock — The knocker scores the difference in deadwood values.
- Gin bonus — 20 extra points, plus the opponent's deadwood.
- Undercut bonus — The undercutting player earns the difference plus 10 points.
- First player to 100 points wins the match, and takes a 100-point game bonus (200 if the loser never scored).
- Box bonus — 20 points for each hand won, added at the end of the match.
Strategy Tips
- Watch the discard pile — Track what your opponent picks up and discards to deduce their hand.
- Keep flexible cards — Middle cards (5-8) form more possible runs and sets than extremes.
- Knock early — Don't wait for gin if you can knock with low deadwood. A quick knock often catches opponents off guard.
- Avoid feeding your opponent — Don't discard cards adjacent to ones they've picked up.
- Break up losing hands — If your hand isn't coming together, pivot your strategy rather than holding onto deadwood.
