How to Play Yahtzee
Yahtzee is the world's most popular dice game, combining luck with strategic decision-making. Created in the 1950s, it challenges players to roll five dice and fill in the highest-scoring combinations across 13 categories. Every roll presents a choice: play it safe or go for glory.
Objective
Score the most points by filling all 13 scoring categories on your scorecard over 13 rounds. Each category can only be used once, so choosing when to use each one is critical.
Setup
- Five standard six-sided dice.
- A scorecard with 13 categories (6 upper, 7 lower).
- Works with any number of players taking turns.
- Each player gets 13 rounds (one per category).
Gameplay
- On your turn, roll all 5 dice.
- After the first roll, choose which dice to keep and re-roll the rest (up to 2 more times).
- You may keep any combination of dice between rolls, or re-roll all of them.
- After your third roll (or earlier if satisfied), assign the result to one empty category on your scorecard.
- If the dice don't fit a desired category, you may place a zero in any unused category.
Scoring Categories
Upper Section
- Ones through Sixes — Sum of all dice showing that number (e.g., three 4s = 12 in the Fours category).
- Upper Bonus — If your upper section totals 63 or more, earn a 35-point bonus.
Lower Section
- Three of a Kind — At least three dice showing the same value. Score = sum of all 5 dice.
- Four of a Kind — At least four dice showing the same value. Score = sum of all 5 dice.
- Full House — Three of one rank plus two of a different rank. Score = 25 points. Five of a kind is not a Full House and scores 0 there, unless the Joker rule below applies.
- Small Straight — Four sequential dice (e.g., 1-2-3-4). Score = 30 points.
- Large Straight — Five sequential dice (e.g., 2-3-4-5-6). Score = 40 points.
- Yahtzee — All five dice showing the same value. Score = 50 points.
- Chance — Any combination. Score = sum of all 5 dice (use as a fallback).
Yahtzee Bonus
If you roll a second Yahtzee and have already scored 50 in the Yahtzee category, you earn a 100-point bonus. If the Yahtzee box was filled with 0, no bonus is ever awarded. Either way you still have to enter the roll somewhere, and the Joker rule decides where.
The Joker Rule
Roll five of a kind while the Yahtzee box is already filled and your choice is forced, in this order:
- If the matching upper box is still open (five 4s → Fours), you must score there.
- Otherwise you must use an open lower box, and the roll acts as a Joker: Full House scores 25, Small Straight 30 and Large Straight 40 even though the dice do not meet the normal requirement. Three of a Kind, Four of a Kind and Chance score the dice sum as usual.
- If the matching upper box and every lower box are filled, you must take a 0 in an open upper box.
This game enforces that order for both you and Tim — boxes you are not allowed to use are struck through and cannot be clicked.
Strategy Tips
- Aim for the upper bonus — Getting 63+ in the upper section (averaging 3 of each number) gives you 35 free points.
- Don't waste Chance early — Save Chance for when you have a high-value roll that doesn't fit anywhere else.
- Go for Yahtzee early — The Yahtzee bonus makes subsequent Yahtzees extremely valuable.
- Sacrifice low-value uppers — If you must take a zero, put it in Ones or Twos where you lose the least.
- Keep pairs and triples — They can develop into Full House, Three/Four of a Kind, or Yahtzee.
- Know the odds — A Large Straight is hard to get. Don't chase it at the expense of guaranteed points.
