How to Play War
War is the ultimate no-strategy card game — pure luck and suspense. It's often the first card game children learn, requiring no decisions during play. Despite its simplicity, the tension of tied battles (wars) keeps players engaged. The game dates back centuries and appears in cultures worldwide under various names.
Objective
Win all 52 cards by having the higher card in each battle. The game continues until one player holds the entire deck.
Setup
- Use a standard 52-card deck. Best with 2 players.
- Shuffle thoroughly and deal the entire deck evenly — 26 cards each.
- Each player places their cards face-down in a stack in front of them.
- Players do not look at their cards.
- Card ranking (high to low): A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.
Gameplay
- Both players simultaneously flip the top card of their stack face-up.
- The player with the higher-ranked card wins both cards and places them at the bottom of their stack.
- Suit does not matter — only rank determines the winner.
- Continue flipping until one player has all the cards (or a set number of rounds is reached).
War (Tied Battles)
When both players flip cards of equal rank, a "war" occurs:
- Each player places three cards face-down (the stakes).
- Then each player flips one card face-up.
- The higher face-up card wins all 10 cards (2 original + 6 face-down + 2 face-up).
- If the face-up cards tie again, another war begins — repeat until someone wins.
- If a player runs out of cards during a war, they lose the game.
Winning
The game ends when one player holds all 52 cards. In casual play, many people set a time limit or round limit since games can run long. The player with the most cards when time expires wins.
Tips and Variants
- Speed War — Play faster by not pausing between flips. Good for younger kids.
- One-card War — In a tie, place only one face-down card instead of three for shorter games.
- Three-player War — Deal cards evenly (17 each, 1 aside). Highest card each round takes all.
- Joker variant — Add two Jokers as the highest cards in the deck for extra excitement.
Why War is Great
- Zero decisions required — perfect for very young players learning card ranks.
- Teaches number comparison and patience.
- No reading or complex rules needed.
- The "war" mechanic adds genuine excitement to an otherwise simple game.
