How to Play Euchre
Euchre is a fast-paced trick-taking card game for four players in two partnerships. It uses a reduced deck of 24 cards and features unique "bower" cards that make trump selection critical. Popular across the Midwest United States, Canada, and parts of Europe, Euchre is known for quick rounds and exciting gameplay.
Objective
Be the first team to score 10 points by winning the majority of tricks (at least 3 of 5) each round.
The Deck
- 24 cards: 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace of each suit
- 4 players in 2 teams (partners sit across from each other)
- 5 cards dealt to each player
Card Ranking
The trump suit has special ranking. If hearts are trump:
- Right Bower: Jack of trump suit (Jack of Hearts) — highest card in the game
- Left Bower: Jack of same color (Jack of Diamonds) — second highest, counts as trump
- Then: Ace, King, Queen, 10, 9 of trump
Non-trump suits rank normally: Ace (high), King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9 (low).
Dealing
- Deal 5 cards to each player (in groups of 2 and 3)
- Flip the next card face-up — this is the "turn-up card"
- The turn-up card's suit is proposed as trump
Calling Trump
Round 1: Turn-Up Suit
- Starting left of the dealer, each player may "order up" the turn-up suit as trump or pass
- If someone orders up, the dealer picks up the turn-up card and discards one card
Round 2: Name Any Suit
- If all four players pass in Round 1, a second round begins
- Each player may name any suit except the turn-up suit as trump, or pass
- The dealer is "stuck" — if everyone else passes, the dealer must name a suit
Gameplay
- The player left of the dealer leads the first trick
- You must follow the led suit if possible
- If you cannot follow suit, you may play any card (including trump)
- The highest trump wins; if no trump played, highest of the led suit wins
- Winner leads the next trick
- 5 tricks total per round
Going Alone
When calling trump, a player may declare "alone." Their partner sits out that round. If the lone player wins all 5 tricks, their team scores 4 points instead of the normal 2.
Scoring
- Makers win 3-4 tricks: 1 point
- Makers win all 5 tricks (march): 2 points
- Defenders win 3+ tricks (euchre): 2 points to defenders
- Lone player wins all 5: 4 points
- Lone player wins 3-4: 1 point
- Lone player is euchred: 2 points to defenders
Strategy Tips
- Count bowers: The Right and Left Bower are the two strongest cards. Having one is a strong reason to call trump
- Call with 3+ trump: Generally, you need at least 3 trump cards (or 2 including a bower) to safely call
- Lead trump: If your team called, lead trump to pull opponents' trump cards out early
- Support your partner: If partner called trump, play high cards to help them win tricks
- Go alone carefully: Only go alone with very strong hands (both bowers + high cards). The extra 2 points is not worth the risk of being euchred
- Short-suit strategy: Being void in a non-trump suit lets you trump early
Winning the Game
The first team to reach 10 points wins. Games are typically fast — 15 to 25 minutes — making Euchre perfect for quick sessions.
