How to Play Crazy Eights
Crazy Eights is one of the most popular card games for 2-4 players. It is the basis for the commercial game UNO. The goal is simple: be the first player to get rid of all your cards.
What You Need
- A standard 52-card deck
- 2 to 4 players (or play against AI on our site)
Setup
Deal 5 cards to each player (7 cards for 2 players). Place the remaining deck face-down as the draw pile. Turn the top card face-up to start the discard pile. If the first card is an 8, bury it in the draw pile and flip a new card.
Rules
On your turn, you must play a card that matches either:
- The suit of the top card on the discard pile, OR
- The rank of the top card on the discard pile, OR
- An 8 (which is wild and can be played at any time)
If you cannot play, draw one card from the draw pile. If the drawn card is playable, you may play it immediately. Otherwise, your turn ends.
The Power of 8s
Eights are wild cards. When you play an 8, you declare which suit the next player must match. This is the key strategic element — use your 8s wisely to control the game or escape when you have no other plays.
Scoring
When a player empties their hand, the round ends. The winner scores points based on cards remaining in opponents' hands:
- 8s = 50 points each
- Face cards (K, Q, J) = 10 points each
- Aces = 1 point each
- Number cards = face value
Strategy Tips
- Save your 8s — They are your most powerful cards. Use them when you have no other option or to strategically change the suit.
- Play high-value cards first — Get rid of face cards and high numbers early to minimize your penalty if someone else wins.
- Watch what others play — Track which suits opponents are collecting and avoid changing to those suits.
- Change suit to your advantage — When playing an 8, pick the suit you have the most cards of.
Common Variations
- Draw until you can play — Some versions make you keep drawing until you get a playable card.
- Special cards — Some versions give special abilities to cards like 2 (draw two), Queen (skip), Ace (reverse).
- Multiple cards — Some versions let you play multiple cards of the same rank in one turn.
